Greta van Fleet’s premiere debut album, Anthem of a Peaceful Army, is scheduled to release October 19. Their sound is a nod to the 70’s with themes of peace and love and a sound like Led Zeppelin. Anthem of a Peaceful Army is an album that’s instantly familiar. When the first notes begin, you’re taken back to a familiar times, and even though the songs are brand new, they feel like you’ve known them for years, and it’s easy to listen to them over and over again.
The opening track, “Age of Man,” beings beautifully with violins, followed by the band’s own instruments. It has a soft melody and lovely lyrics like “Beauty lives in every soul, the more you love the more you know. They pass the torch and it still burns, once children then it’s now our turn.”
“The Cold Wind” then amps up the album with a great opening guitar riff reminiscent of ZZ Top, and then jumping in right away with the band’s Led Zeppelin-esque sound. John Kizka’s belting vocals and the beat in makes this song, as well as the rest of the upbeat album, easy to get into and instantly has your body swaying to the beat.
“You’re the One” is one of my favorite tracks of the album. It slows things down from the rest of the album, and has lyrics of longing “You’re the one I want, you’re the one I need, you’re the one I had, so come back to me.” “Mountain of the Sun” is another favorite track of mine, and continues the theme of loving a woman. The opening lyrics are so sweet, stating that the “sun shines brighter and you’re the woman I love.”
I loved every single track of this album, and I recommend adding into your library if you’re a classic rock fan. Anthem of a Peaceful Army has positive, uplifting themes and a great sound, it’s a great listen!
