Weezer At The Coastal Federal Credit Union Music Park 7-24-2018

Written By: Zaneta Padilla

Thunderstorms threatened the forecast in Raleigh on July 24th, but 10,000 fans took the chance and piled into Coastal Federal Credit Union Music Park to see The Pixies and Weezer on their joint tour. The weather staved off and gave the perfect conditions for the night. While it was hot and humid ,it was comfortable and the sun peaked out just enough to add great lighting to the stage.

Sleigh Bells opened the night. Front woman, Alexis Krauss, lit up the stage with her energy as she danced between lyrics with a Stevie Nicks/Salsa vibe. The poppy dance sound they have had the crowd up in their seats immediately.

The Pixies were next on stage and every 90’s music fan was ecstatic. Their set was simple with simple spotlights and a subtle set design, which gave a club vibe and instantly brought me back to the 90’s, imagining them playing in clubs in their early career.

Just after The Pixies finished their set, a big black curtain was raised. When the curtain dropped, Al’s Diner was on stage and they kicked off their set with “Buddy Holly” followed by “Beverly Hills” dressed in retro outfits of the era. When “Undone” came on, lead singer, Rivers Cuomo, tore off his cardigan and the 50’s set changed inconspicuously.

Halfway down the set, Rivers put on a sea captain’s hat and shirt and sailed a scooter into the crowd, then got on a small boat to a center stage for an acoustic solo of “Island in Sun” and “Take on Me” cover. Back on the main stage, “Feels like Summer” was accompanied by a killer pyrotechnic display that made the song feel more like summer with the scorching heat.

Weezer finished the night with “Africa” and “Say It Ain’t So” where all 10,000 people sang along, then they played half of Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” as their final goodnight to the crowd.

This summer, make sure you catch Weezer and The Pixies on their joint summer tour. With the fun set design, friendly lyrics, and clean monologues from the band, it’s a family friendly show that will bring nostalgia of the 90’s back. Tour dates and tickets can be found on LiveNation.
