Reverend Horton Heat, with special guest Unknown Hinson and The Red Elvises, deliver a memorable evening of music in Louisville
Well before the doors opened you could tell the evening was going to be a special one. Earlier in the day, the show was officially announced as a sell-out, many not wasting the chance to see The Reverend Horton Heat in the quaint setting that Zanzabar provides.
As the sold-out crowd cram into the Zanzabar performance area, the house lights drop and one by one tonight’s opener, The Red Elvises, take the stage. In a fun, tongue in cheek and light-hearted way frontman/guitarist Igor Yuzov, wearing what can only be described as a Leopard print silk suit, launch into a rip-roaring set. With songs about the KGB, bacon and disco dancing, The Red Elvises have the entire venue in the palm of their hands, right where Igor wants them. With drummer Jasmin Guevara doing some serious work behind her kit, Tim Hayn on the keyboards, trumpet, and vocals, along with some serious bass lines being thrown down by Dejah Sandoval, The Red Elvises had the crowd jumping and singing from the word go.
During the changeover, Zanzabar was literally buzzing with excitement and energy. Without much fanfare, The Reverend Horton Heat casually take their places on stage greeted by a huge cheer. Capitalizing on the energy already in the room, Jim “Reverend Horton” Heath and bassist Jimbo Wallace catapult right into “Big Sky,” “Baddest of the Bad,” huge fan favorite “Psychobilly Freakout,” “Big Little Baby” and “Lonesome Train Whistle” and the evening is off to a blazing start. Over the next 60 minutes, The Reverend steamroll through a raucous rockabilly/psychobilly set that the crowd is clearly enjoying,
After a very short break, Unknown Hinson is introduced, taking his place behind the mic. Unknown Hinson joins The Reverend Horton Heat for six or seven songs including “Silver Platter,” “Fish Camp Woman” and a cover of “I Fought the Law”. Unknown Hinson is an American singer, musician, songwriter, and voice actor. He is perhaps best known for his role as the voice of Early Cuyler on the Adult Swim animated series Squidbillies.
The Reverend Horton Heat close out a memorable evening with a wild and unexpected cover of Motorhead’s “Ace of Spades”, along with “Victory Lap”, the opening track from their newest release on Victory Records and of course a crazy good cover of Johnny Cash’s Folsom Prison, closing the door on a remarkable evening of music with The Reverend, Reverend Horton Heat!
