The Heavy Come Out With Their Latest Album Sons, And It Is Groovy

The Heavy is made up of Kelvin Swaby (lead vocals), Dan Taylor (guitar), Spencer Page (bass guitar) and Chris Ellul (drums). And they just released their new album Sons May 17, 2019, by BMG Rights Management (UK) Limited. The British based rock band got together back in 2007 and have been making funky tunes inspired by Southern Soul and Rock ever since. Sons is the band’s fifth release.

The band has seen tons of success since forming. From sold out shows, to having their music featured on several television series and movies. You can hear some of their tracks on the Dallas Buyers Club, Entourage, and Grey’s Anatomy. And that is just to name a few. The band has also performed on the tickets of major music festivals such as Coachella, and for talk shows such as The Late Show with David Letterman. Their music was also made part of Obama’s campaign during his presidential bid.

The new album itself is a fantastic listen. This is the first time I personally have listened to the band, so I can’t testify to how well the band has grown. But, skimming through previous albums, it is easy to see they haven’t ventured off from their original sound. Sons is a nice blend of funk, soul, and rock.

My favorite song on this is “Burn Bright”. The deep and mellow music, along with the haunting and soulful vocals, make this song an easy listening tune. It has a very seductive, mysterious way about it that captures and intrigues me. “Heavy for You” is a great opener for the album. It is in your face but in a good way. You instantly want to turn the volume up. And good luck trying not to dance a bit to it. ”The Thief” features some creative storytelling, it offers a nice, funky twist to your typical love song. “Better as One” took me back to a time when jazz and funk music was popular. The stars of this song are the brass instruments featured in this jam. They make for a very fun and funky song. Again, good luck trying not to dance along. I could go on and on about the songs on this album, but I will let you check them out. Scoop up this album on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, Apple Music or the band’s official store.

I give this album an 8.5 out of 10
