The Silverstiles are a Grand Rapids’ band that has been getting their name out there a lot lately. They changed their line-up a bit, have a new album underway, and they recently released a single (with a “B” side) for that new album.
The band is John Bruni, Keith Jaissle, and Danny McCoy. You can find them on Facebook, www.facebook.com/silverstiles/. Their music is best described as lo-fi indie rock. The two songs, “Two Days” and “Sweet Talking Miracle Man,” have a vintage feel to them, like a rock flashback to the 60s and 70s. It’s refreshing and nostalgiac at the same time.
“Two Days” is reminiscent of The Beatles. It’s a free-flowing song that has a whimsical feel to it. The recordings are rough-cuts, so they’re very echoey, making you feel like you’re in a tunnel or in the midst of a trip. However, that sound, that vibe, feels good, especially with this track. It gives it a little something more. It’s raw and open… it’s not hiding its flaws or its feelings.
“Sweet Talking Miracle Man” has a punk beat. It’s like a mellow version of The Ramones. In fact, it’s kind of a cross between The Ramones/The Misfits and The Beach Boys/Jan & Dean. It has that surfer sound to it, but it’s a very punk song. The instruments scream punk. Seriously.
These are a couple of great songs. The full album will surely be something amazing to listen to. Five stars!
