Godsmack’s When Legends Rise

Godsmack's When Legends Rise

It’s been two decades since Godsmack released their debut album and they’re still going strong. Their newest album, which dropped late April, is just as good as anything great they’ve put out. It has the same heavy rock sound you’ve come to expect from this band, with Sully’s amazing vocals leading each tune.

While most of the songs have that hard rock sound you expect to hear, there are some nuances that slow things down a bit from time to time. The title track, “When Legends Rise,” opens the album up with something exactly like what you’d expect from Godsmack. The drums pull you in with that tribal feel. The lyrics are anthemic and full of the visual aspects you’ve come to expect from this clever band.

A few songs in you get a slow tune. “Under Your Scars” is a beautiful song, from the mellow tune of the instruments to the loving, visual lyrics. This will be a song that lovers fall for. It’s a true rock love song. It almost has an 80s rock love song feel to it, but it’s a very timely tune.

Each of the eleven songs on this new album lends a little bit of a different sound to the overall feel. One of the ones that stood out the most is the final track, “Eye of the Storm,” which is another track much like the title one- it has that classic Godsmack sound you’re all hoping to hear. This album is closer to that two-decade-old debut album than much of the band’s stuff has been since then. And, because of that nostalgia and the fact that they also managed to make this album sound relevant to the rock we’re listening to these days, it is definitely a five-star effort.
