New Years Day’s Unbreakable

New Years Day's Unbreakable

Dubbed as their heaviest album to date, Unbreakable is the newest album from New Years Day which is set to be released 26 April. New Years Day is another of the many bands I’ve been following since their beginning. They have grown to be one of the most empowering female fronted metal bands in the scene, touring with the likes of Maria Brink of In This Moment and Lizzy Hale of Halestorm.

Unbreakable is unlike any other New Years Day album. In recent interviews, Ash Castello talks about Unbreakable saying the new album was instrumentally the heaviest fused together with melodic vocals. Drawing influence from the likes of No Doubt, Drake, and Kehlani, the band sat down with both pop and metal music writers during the creation process. After a long gap between Melovance and Unbreakable, the difference between previous and new music can be seen right away with track one. The pop-metal sound is a head-turning plot twist that wouldn’t be expected from a band such as New Years Day, but with careful considerations and creative decisions, Unbreakable is the rising phoenix of their career.

As talked about in interviews, the time in which the band wrote Melovance is considered their darkest time, both personally and musically. Over the four-year gap, each member changed drastically and these changes are reflected upon the nature of the album. The tracks “Skeletons” and “Sorry Not Sorry” are perhaps the best tracks to use as examples. The recognizable New Years Day sound is present in the two tracks, but the penetrating melodic vocals, pop roots, metal roots, and lyrical choices show just how much the band has changed. Costello explores different vocal avenues and lyric choices in Unbreakable furthering her creativeness as an artist.

Unbreakable will be the hardest hitting album from New Years Day and will leave a lasting impression in several musical libraries and playlists. The album hits stores 26 April, including their singles “Skeletons,” “Shut Up,” and “Come For Me,” which are available for streaming on their Spotify and YouTube.
