The line weaved all the way down the block and around the corner, full of anxious Kiefer Sutherland fans excited to see his performance at The Ark – an iconic theater in Ann Arbor Michigan. The 400 seat facility had easily sold out, much to the dismay of numerous people approaching the box office Monday evening looking for a way into the show.
Austin Plaine, a singer songwriter from Minneapolis Minnesota, opened the night. Plaine’s crisp, clear voice entertained the mature crowd with some of his most popular songs including “Never Come Back,” “Other Side of Town,” his ballad “Beautiful”and “America.” Plaine left his mark on the Ann Arbor crowd, who quickly became new fans.
After a brief intermission, the moment the sold out crowd had waited for finally arrived. Keifer Sutherland and his band came on stage to a thunderous ovation. The crowd roared as the actor / singer / songwriter walked out. He opened the highly anticipated set with “Can’t Stay Away.” Sutherland immediately connected with the fans and continuously interacted with the crowd and his band. He seemed at ease in front of the sold out crowd, but commented to the audience that they were the first one he has seen that remained seated.
Sutherland played his hit single “Not Enough Whiskey” while the crowd sang along with enthusiasm. One of Sutherland’s personal favorites, “My Best Friend”, followed “Going Home” before Sutherland talked about some of of the songs that have impacted his life. The band belted out five more songs with each one drawing the crowd in more than the last one while Sutherland picked his guitar and poured out his heart through his lyrics. The thirteen song set came to a close with the song “Down In A Hole” and the crowd wanted more!
After a very short break, the encore began with “Gonna Die” which was a song written by Sutherland nine years ago after meeting a veteran and helping him get the care he needed at the veteran’s hospital. Sutherland’s heart-felt words hit home with the audience. Sutherland exuded charisma as he talked between the final two songs and told stories about his childhood and listening to Bob Dylan eight tracks in his Dad’s 1960’s Ferrari that he won in a poker game. People listened intensely to the star as if they were mesmerized by his every word. Sutherland then went into a bang up cover of Bob Dylan’s “Knocking on Heavens Door” that ended the show on a high note. The crowd appeared to be completely satisfied with the encore and cheered for what seemed like forever before they finally made their way to the exits.
