Since 2013 some pretty interesting creative forces have been working together under the guise of Dunsmuir. Not only this band boost having the talented Neil Fallon, of Clutch, on vocals, but the band is rounded out with Black Sabbath’s Vinny Appice, Fu Manchu’s Brad Davis, and The Comapny Band’s Dave Bone.

For Clutch fans, don’t expect that tongue in cheek lyrical genius you hear when you listen to them, but do expect lyrical and vocal genius. All in all, rightfully so, the music of Dunsmuir sounds much like a perfect blend of 70s stoner rock, with some 80s metal. You can hear the influences of both Black Sabbath and Fu Manchu in the songs.

From the beginning, with Hung On The Rocks, you can instantly recognize Fallon’s vocals, and this song start with a bitch of a Clutch sound to it. For fans of current metal music, Our Only Master kind of has a bit of a Volbeat sound to it, and delves into kind of an 80s metal sound, as I already mentioned you’ll notice throughout this album.

The Bats (Are Hungry Tonight) is by far my favorite song on this album. Maybe it has something to do with it having bats in the title, or maybe it’s just a great song. What Manner Of Bliss sounds like what Clutch might have sounded like if they had came out in the 70s. It really has a strong Black Sabbath feel to it, and Fallon’s vocals almost sound Ozzy-esque

This is definitely not Clutch, but it is something that Clutch fans could totally dig it. There are a total of ten songs on this album and each of them will have you wanting to hear more. It really does have a 70s and 80s metal feel to it. I would compare some songs, like Deceiver, to Kiss, as well as the other comparisons I’ve already made.

It’s definitely easy to give this album 5 stars, and highly recommend it to anyone that likes rock music, in general. So far it’s my favorite new release of the year.
