Clutch’s Second Annual Earth Rocker Festival 8-4-2018

Written By: Brandon Delano

With a lineup that featured EYEHATEGOD, Corrosion of Conformity, Black Label Society, and Clutch there’s no wonder the 2nd Annual Earth Rocker Festival set new attendance records for Shiley Acres.

As with all shows at Shiley Acres Let There Be Rock School Frederick got things started for the day. This is always a highlight of any show at Shiley Acres as it gives some up and coming talent from the school the opportunity to play on a large stage in front of a large crowd.

Kicking off the national acts for the day was New Orleans’ EYEHATEGOD. With the recent departure of guitarist Brian Patton the band took the stage as a four piece but that didn’t stop them from setting the mood for what was to come.

Corrosion of Conformity released their tenth studio album, No Cross No Crown early this year. The album marked the return of vocalist/guitarist Pepper Keenan who had last performed on 2005’s In The Arms of God. The guys played a shortened seven song set that featured “The Luddite” from the new album and was rounded out with COC  classics, “Broken Man,” “Albatross,” and “Clean My Wounds.” John Green is currently filling in for Reed behind the drums on this leg of the tour, Reed underwent knee surgery a few months back and still has not rejoined Pepper, Woody, and Mike. The guys will headline a few shows in Ohio, Louisiana, and Texas before heading over to Europe for a headlining tour in October.

Corrosion of Conformity Setlist: Bottom Feeder (El que come abajo), The Luddite, Broken Man, Señor Limpio, Vote With a Bullet, Albatross, and Clean My Wounds.

Up next were Black Label Society, who were making their debut appearance at Shiley Acres. Zakk and crew hit the stage in the sweltering heat and ripped into a ten song set that left the crowd in awe. Decked in his kilt, denim Black Label Society vest, and playing his own signature Wylde Audio guitars the guys kicked things off with “Genocide Junkies,” and quickly moved in to “Funeral Bell,” and “Bleed for Me.” “In This River” was dedicated to Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul who recently passed away of a heart attack, large banners of the two were spread across the tall stacks of amplifiers on each side of the stage as Zakk sat at the piano. For “Fire it Up” Zakk took his shredding to the crowd as he went down and thru the barricade to play in the middle of the crowd returning to the pit in front of the stage to finish his solo while playing behind his head. Zakk Wylde will head out with Ozzy to continue Ozzy’s farewell tour followed by a winter tour on Generation Axe which also features Steve Vai, Yngwie Malsteen, Nuno Bettencourt, and Tosin Abasi.
