The female-lead heavy alternative City of the Weak is releasing their full length album Pulling Teeth June 22 this year. Just discovering this band this week, I really like what I hear, and their sound is unique. I had a hard time finding a band to compare them with, and looking at their repertoire of bands they’ve opened for, it shows that their sound is unique, yet universal and can compliment a variety of rock styles.

In Pulling Teeth, there wasn’t one particular song that stood out to me, but I genuinely enjoyed the whole album. In a still male-dominated genre, the female lead was a refreshing sound and Stef’s voice has a great range that complimented the instrumentals perfectly.

The first track, “Like I Do,” starts the album strong. I love the intro of the instrumentals building. The drums stand out the most and it gives the song a great beat. Right away, the lyrics start off with a “girl-power” vibe saying “I don’t give a damn if you don’t like it. I’m going to do my own thing, God forbid.”

“Censor This” carries the same message as the first track saying “I’m gonna say what I want to, I’m gonna do, what I need to, so cut me off.” The whole album has a theme of independence, and unapologetic individuality, and not allowing others to affect that.

This album is one to add to your library. Their sound is great and easy to listen to and feel, and listening closer, the lyrics are great to hear repeatedly giving yourself a boost with a “don’t give a damn” attitude.

Track list:

1. Like I Do

2. Trust nobody

3. Glad You could make It

4. Not This Time

5. Censor This

6. Ungrateful

7. Drag Us Under

8. Drop The Anchor

9. Suffer Like Me

10. Pulling Teeth.
