Shun The Raven At The Blind Tiger, Greensboro, NC 1-11-2020

Written By: Zaneta Padilla

Recently crowned North Carolina’s “Rock Band Of The Year,” Shun The Raven started 2020 with a bang, performing in Greensboro at the Blind Tiger.

Durham-based Southern Rock Jam Band, Leadfoot opened the night. With hair everywhere, these rockers came out the gate fast and heavy, and the crowd was into it from the get-go. Those unfamiliar with their music still enjoyed their performance, dancing along and with their fists in the air.

Scars Remain was next on the bill. They brought intense energy with their heavy sound. In the most metal fashion, the vocalist let everyone know that the drummer was thereafter just being on his deathbed from the man-flu. Besides the dedication and the no f***s given to death’s knock on their door, Scars Remain is fun to watch, and listen. They really get the blood pumping.

Alternative rock band, American Theory came on right before STR took the stage. With the perfect balance of melodic vocals and heavy instrumentals, the crowd was instantly drawn in and it started getting tighter once American Theory came on stage.

Finally Shun the Raven came on stage. Fans packed in around the stage, and nearly everyone there sported a Shun the Raven shirt. Shrouded in red light, they opened with Feed the Beast. Halfway through their set, they played a cover of Pink Floyd’s The Wall–this may be my favorite cover I’ve heard. I appreciated the style they added to it, that as soon as they played it, there was a vague familiarity and I was trying to place the song before they started singing–it was a Shun the Raven cover, and not just playing “The Wall” like so many covers are. They closed the night with their two latest singles, “Clockwork” and “Tale of Two Tales.”
