Pixies's Come on Pilgrim... It's Surfer Rosa

Want to feel old? This year marks the 30th anniversary of Surfer Roser, and the Pixies are celebrating with a reissue that is more than just one album. It’s actually a 3-disc collection which includes a reissue of the 8-songs from Come on Pilgrim, as well as a live album (1986 Radio Concert “Live From The Fallout Shelter”). Pixies fans will delight in this collection, available late September.

There really isn’t anything new here – but you can expect some amazing live sounds and recordings that are crisper than you ever remember. Plus, if you’re really a Pixie fan – does it matter if you already have the original albums?

If you’re a Pixies fan (and even if you’re not), you’ve heard at least a couple of the songs from Surfer Rosa. This album put the Pixies on the musical map and remains a must-have item in any true music lovers stash. “Where Is My Mind?” has been played in numerous movies, including Fight Club. “Gigantic” and “Bone Machine” are two of the songs that stand out the most on this album, and still stand out on the remaster.

“Gigantic” is actually the only song on Surfer Rosa that wasn’t completely written by Frank Black – Kim Deal, the band’s bass player, had a big hand in that song and it’s definitely an amazing tune.

Come on Pilgrim was the debut “mini-release” (it would be called an EP these days) from the Pixies that came out before Surfer Rosa. Die-hard fans know it, and music nerds. It’s filled with the same fuzzy rock, trippy sounding music that you’d expect from the Pixies. “Caribou” is a must-listen-to track on this album – and the remaster is glorious.

There is so much going on with this new collection (as in a crisp sound and some cool live tunes) that all you can do is get your hands on it for yourself. The Pixies are an all-time 5-star band – there’s no question about it. These remasters sound amazing and have enhanced all of the things that sound best about this band. It’s a collection that any Pixie fan would be happy to own.
