The New Low is a Salt Lake City band that has been on the road with the Van’s Warped Tour this year, and recently had their album Continuance come out. The New Low is an alternative metal band, with the sound you’d imagine from such a genre. The New Low got their start as Hearts & Hands. The band consists of Garrett Garfield (vocals), Fletcher Howell (bass/vocals), Hiram Hernandez (guitar), Christopher Kim (guitar) and Corey Beaver (drums). The album has a theme, basically life. We all know that life kicks us around, and you’ve just got to stand back up and take it. Each song on this albums delves into the facts of life. You either need to get up or die. Each song has powerful lyrics, starting from the first track on the album. Get What You Give says, “Sick and tired and I’ve had enough Do you really think that you’re that tough? Or that you’ve had it rough?” Burning Bridges, the second track, is one of my favorites. It has so many changes musically that it’s kind of a roller coaster ride of a song. The lyrics will have you feeling the truth of the song. We all sometimes feel like we have the weight of the world on our shoulders, but we need to remember not to try to bring other people down with us. This really isn’t a feel good album, instead it’s a music allegory filled with the truth of how painful life can be. All ten songs tell a story and remind you that life is tough. If you like the alternative metal sound that is all over the radio these days, this is a band you want to check out. Their vocals are clean, they know how to play their instruments, and their songs give you something more than just rhyming nonsense. Normally I wouldn’t give a band like this a second listen, but it’s the lyrics and the premise of the album that has me hooked. If you’ve ever had life kick you while you’re down, you’ll find comfort and truth in this album.
