King 810's Suicide King

This is my first listen to King 810 and my first thought upon the opening notes of “Heartbeats” was Korn- “Freak on A Leash”. It really reminded me of this song because the styles are similar (in my opinion). Come to find out King 810 is inspired by Korn, and have been compared to Slipknot, and Bury Tomorrow. Their newest album, Suicide King releases next Friday, January 25th.

Let me start out with saying that I usually don’t listen to a lot of metal, it was never my go-to genre, but the more time I spend in the rock scene, the more I am finding songs and artists that I am interested in.

This album was interesting to me, not something I am familiar with. For those that are unfamiliar with the band, like myself, King 810 is a metal band out of Flint, Michigan that formed in 2007. From what I have read about the band, their songs have a large dose of reality found in their every day life.

The feel of the first song goes from a kind of “creepy talking” (probably not the best description) to a fast-paced beat, including some chanting. I like the first phrase of the song “How can we give them something new that’s serious but entertaining too”. I felt like it’s a great hook for the song and it really caught my attention. I did have to listen to the song a few times before I understood what the song was about. The feeling changes between the introduction of their songs and the main body of the song remains a consistent theme throughout the album that I can really appreciate.

I like how the band alternates between heavy-hitting beats and some slower, calmer beats in their music. It doesn’t feel like a “typical” metal album to me and I can really appreciate that. I like how they include the chanting and speeches in their music to help break up the songs and make them more interesting. I am having a hard time picking a favorite song, although the first track definitely sticks with me. There are things I like about each song, which makes it hard to choose a favorite. This album is definitely worth a listen, even if Metal music isn’t usually your genre.

I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed this band and am going to go back and listen to their older work as well. I know the band draws inspiration for their music from real life experiences, but I feel like they are also great story tellers in their songs. People can relate more to their songs because it’s about things they’ve actually experienced.
