Keith Morris & The Crooked Numbers' Psychopaths & Sycophants

One of the most interesting things, aside from the music itself, about this upcoming album from Keith Morris & The Crooked Numbers, is the story behind the album name. First, with research, there was no news of the exact release date for this, but you can watch Keith’s website (the link is at the bottom of this review).

So, according to the press release, the story goes that Morris had a completely different name lined up for this album. It was going to be named in tribute to Leonard Cohen, as Trump Songs for Leonard Cohen, since Cohen died the day before the presidential election would tell us that Trump would be the next in office. However, Cohen’s estate wouldn’t allow it, so it became Psychopaths & Sycophants instead.

Listening to the first track, “The Future”, gives you a little bit of a taste of the influence that fuels Morris’ passion as a musician. This song is a Leonard Cohen song written in the 90s that still sounds so relevant today. Plus, Morris does it great justice in his version. It’s one of two Cohen covers on this album.

There are some great song titles on this album, from “The Narcissist” to the title track. Fans of music from Cohen himself will enjoy all of these songs. They have that same mellow, story-filled, spoken word vibe to them, without as baritone a voice.

This is a political album, but it doesn’t feel like it’s shoving anything down your throat.

The sax on “Psychopaths & Sycophants” helps to make this one of the best tracks on this 9-track album. It almost sounds like something you’d expect to hear in a blues or jazz bar/lounge.

This album gets an A+ for creative sound, great lyrics, and music that truly gets the story across in a way that will keep you listening, from the beginning to the end.
