The Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame inductee duo Heart is releasing the album from their VH1 Decades Rock Live show in 2006. This album features the incredible talent of guest musicians Alice in Chains, Dave Navarro, Rufus Wainwright, Duff McKagan, Gretchen Wilson, and Carrie Underwood. While I’m not usually a fan of live albums, this one is incredible by collaborating with one of the most iconic rock bands with great musicians in rock and country to celebrate rock.
Dave Navarro joins Heart on 4 tracks: “Bébé Le Strange,” “Straight On,” “Crazy on You,” and “Misty Mountain Hop.” Heart is still amazing on stage, and these classic songs were made better with Dave Navarro joining them on guitar. It gave these songs a great modern edge to the classic hits. “Crazy on You” has always been a song that has amazed me with the guitar riffs, so hearing Dave join the duo was a perfect match for this song.
Gretchen Wilson has always had that great gritty voice, and it complimented Nancy so well on “Even It Up” and “Rock ‘n’ Roll.” Sometimes through the song, it was hard to decipher who was singing. Carrie Underwood joined Heart on “Alone,” with her belting voice that’s needed for the power ballad was another perfect collaboration.
Alice in Chains joined Heart and Guns N’ Roses’ Duff McKagen for their “Would” and “Rooster.” I would have loved to hear Nancy’s vocals on these tracks, but the instrumental collaboration was flawless, with a heavier sound that only live performances amplify.
It’s only fitting that the final track is the band’s most iconic song, “Barracuda,” and all of the guest artists joined in this song. It’s always been such a rock powerhouse and a great song to jam out to. This version is no different! None of the guest artists really stood out in the song, but I actually really liked that, because it made it possible to just get lost in the song and enjoy it, than being distracted with a guest voice.
Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart have blazed so many trails in the music industry, and for women in the industry, especially, for 40 years. This tribute is well-deserved and such an incredible collection of talent. This show was historical with some of the greatest performers in rock, so make sure you pick up a copy on its release date, January 25.
