Grand Rapids’ LOKELLA

Grand Rapids' LOKELLA

LOKELLA is a Michigan based band, hailing from Grand Rapids. They released their sophomore album, Shedding Skin, in August and it has been the talk of the local scene since. With a mere five songs, front to back this album is solid.

LOKELLA is Chris Bursley, Evan Bartlett, Jennifer Bartlett, and Nathan Jean. According to their Facebook page, they have been described as “progressive, grungy jazz-rock with catchy hooks.”

“Precious” has a heavy metallic feel to it. It’s a powerful and intriguing song. It’s reminiscent of some of the heavier songs from Halestorm. Jennifer’s vocals are fabulous and she sings well in this genre, rock border-lining something heavier. From this first song, it is evident that the members of this band know their instruments and are musical geniuses, at the least.

“Keep Quiet” has a grungier feel to it than the previous song. Jennifer has a stellar scream, and this song will give you goosebumps. “Moon Eyes” allows you a chance to hear how each person in this band can change up their sound. It’s easy to get a listen to the drums, guitar, and even the bass, singularly, within the notes of this tune. It’s a far milder song, but still bordering on a metal/hard rock sound.

“Man Down” is the stand-out track on this album. It has a power that vibrates through you and gets under your skin. “March of the Empath” finishes off this must-have album with a great beat.

If you like hard rock, powerful female vocals, and talented musicians making catchy music, this is an album for you.
