Ghost X Gardens' Hittin the Bricks (Single)

“Hittin the Bricks” is a single off the new album, Heartbreak Hotel Chelsea, from an art-rock creative based out of New York. Ghost X Gardens’ music has been compared to both Lou Reed and the Smashing Pumpkins.

“Hittin the Bricks” starts out with some guitar licks that can only be compared to 70s rock. It starts with kind of an In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida feel to it – but that changes the moment the lyrics start. It is the vocals on this track that likely get this talented musician’s music compared to that of Lou Reed.

The music has a punk feel to it, in that laid-back punk kind of way. It has a lounge act sound, mixed with carnival music, and so much more. Somehow the mishmash of sounds comes out making this an interestingly amazing song.

There is some commentary on this track, if you check it out online, about the Chelsea Hotel. Here is what the bio has to say about this –

Ghost X Gardens lived in a permanent residence at Chelsea Hotel and recorded this album while he lived there. While there, he had plenty of drunken chats with the hotel’s matriarch, Storme’ DeLarverie. “She was a performer and MC at the Apollo, who is credited with throwing the first punch of the 1969 Stonewall Riots, a major moment in the path to gay liberation and LGBT rights. These excerpts are her last known recordings.”

Within the album, you’ll hear her music as well as that of Ghost X gardens. It’s haunting. Even in this track, for “Hittin the Bricks,” you get a taste of DeLarverie’s vocal accomplishments.

This is a five-star track. Not only is the song creative, but including the music of another talented artist for no other reason than to tell her story – this is music worth listening to.
