Eric Church At The Anthem In Washington, DC

Written By: Brandon Delano

Eric Church brought his ‘Double Down’ tour to the nation’s capital this past weekend, Side Stage Magazine was on hand for night one of two sold-out shows at The Anthem. Eric Church played a different massive thirty-two song set each night that covered his six studio albums as well as included numerous covers mixed into each night. Showtime was at eight, but the show was delayed an hour to allow the massive line of fans to enter the venue. The Anthem holds roughly six thousand so this gave fans a chance to get up close and personal with Eric as they filled the venue to the rafters. Many may have thought with the show being in a smaller venue that they would get a scaled-down version of the tour but that wasn’t the case as they were treated to an arena-sized show in an intimate setting that The Anthem provides.

In what has since gone viral, Eric Church took a jab at Garth Brooks and more importantly the CMA Awards during his cover of Waylon Jennings’ “Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way.” With many feeling, Eric should have won the award for Entertainer of the Year over Garth Brooks, Eric changed the last line of the song to “I know Garth didn’t do it this way” bringing loud applause from the sold-out crowd and even causing his bandmates to laugh at the verse. Video of the song can be seen below.
