Cane Hill is about to release their first full length album, though it’s not their first recording. With a self-titled EP under their belt from 2015, Smile is proving to be a much awaited recording for the band themselves, and their fans. Hailing from New Orleans, Cane Hill (which consists of vocalist Elijah Witts, guitarist James Barnett, bass guitarist Ryan Henriquez, and percussionist Devin Clark) are a metal act that actually spouts pure metal, with harsh vocals, great licks, and loud bass and drums.

Called Nu Metal, and compared to many Nu Metal bands, by past reviewers, Cane Hill doesn’t make me think Nu Metal at all (and trust me, I was a fan back in the day). Instead, they are a fresh sound in today’s cookie cutter metal scene. If you’re tired of radio metal like 5FDP, you’ll find Cane Hill to be as refreshing as I do.

Listening to this album, it is impossible not to bang your head through a majority of the songs. My favorite song, St. Vincent, however, has more of a Korn sound to it. The sound throughout changes from an up tempo, to a slower tempo, and back again. It’s actually one of those songs that will give the listener goosebumps, simply because of the melodic changes. As far as other musical comparisons; Cream Pie almost has a Rob Zombie feel to it (you’ll understand why when you listen to it).

If you want to get a feel of what this first Cane Hill album sounds like, take a visit tot he first video on YouTube, https://youtu.be/W_4adsLrlyE, for the song You’re So Wonderful. This song has a hauntingly magnificent sound, that bears listening to multiple times. It just might give you chills.

I definitely give this entire album a 10. The fact that no two songs sound alike, and that they give a fresh new sound to a dull metal scene. Fans of metal, and Cane Hill, will love this loud album full of great riffs and thought out lyrics.
