Brendan McMahon’s Universalist

Brendan McMahon's Universalist
If you’re ready for some Australian folk rock, Brendan McMahon has a refreshing EP waiting for you. There is something special about this album, something beautiful within each note and something phenomenal about McMahon’s gloriously smooth vocals.

The album starts with “Marker 7-58.” From the morse code intro to the Celtic stylings that include gorgeous mandolin melodies, this song is enough to make you fall in love with the folk sounds of Universalist.

“Hotel Hemmingway” is a breath of fresh air. “Tell me all the dreams you left behind.” This song is so full of life, pain, and dreams. It’s a story about a storyteller, really.

“Fridays In December” starts out with an air of vintage synthpop, but it quickly leads into another mellow singer/songwriter piece that is gloriously fresh. The instruments are beautiful, as are the lyrics and vocals. This song has a fun atmosphere and might have you longing to repeat winter too soon.

This is just a mere taste of the five songs this EP holds. It’s an excellent collection of fresh music that is driven by a blend of rock, pop, folk, and a little bit of country too. The vocals are the best, with McMahon’s beautiful command over his singing voice. Five stars for an album that could be listened to by anyone, young or old.
