Alex Bump's Third-Period Winner Lifts Flyers Past Rangers 3-2 in Rookie Series Opener

A boisterous Saturday night crowd of 5,128 packed PPL Center in Allentown for the 5th Annual NHL Rookie Series, and they got a show. Alex Bump was the star — a game-winner early in the third period, a slick secondary assist on Cole Knuble’s go-ahead goal, and exactly the kind of veteran leadership presence this young Flyers roster needed. Bump and Jett Luchanko were flying together all night, which was expected. What nobody quite scripted was Knuble burying one while his father — former Philadelphia Flyer Mike Knuble — watched from the seats. The Flyers held off a late Rangers push to win Game 1, 3-2, and Carson Bjarnason made sure of it.

How It Happened

First Period: Matthew Gard opened the scoring at 4:23 — the second-round WHL product from Red Deer took a feed from Noah Powell and buried it cleanly to put Philadelphia ahead 1-0. The Rangers answered on the power play at 15:20 when D. Roobreeck deflected a drive from Liam Greentree to tie it. One apiece after twenty, and the building was into it.

Second Period: Philadelphia’s line of Bump, Luchanko, and Knuble took over. Bump tracked down a centering pass along the right boards and found the onrushing Knuble at 15:41 for a goal that made it 2-1 Flyers — and sent the Allentown crowd into a buzz knowing Mike Knuble was in the building watching his son score. The Rangers were outshot 14-4 in the second period and couldn’t generate much of anything offensively.

Third Period: Luchanko turned on the jets early in the third. He pulled the puck around a defender and created an odd-man opportunity, feeding Bump from the left circle for a 3-1 lead at 0:44. Nathan Aspinall answered for New York on the power play just 48 seconds later — a snipe from the left circle to the far post — to make it 3-2 and the Rangers pushed hard from there. Bjarnason was the answer. Twelve of his 27 total saves came in the final frame, and he was perfect at 5-on-5 throughout, turning away every close-range chance New York generated. The tension carried past the final horn — post-game scraps broke out with Powell and Murchison both finding partners, and Spencer Gill was also looking for action. Game 2 should have a different energy because of it.

Goaltending

Carson Bjarnason earned the win, stopping 27 of 29 shots (.931 SV%) in 59:53 of work for Philadelphia. He was sharpest when it mattered most — 12 saves in the third period alone — and was never beaten at even strength. Callum Tung took the loss, stopping 26 of 29 shots (.897 SV%) across 60 minutes for New York.
