Sixteen years after the 2010 Calder Cup Finals, the Bears and Stars finally met in a regular-season game, and it was a tight one. Hershey was outshot again, the power play went scoreless again, and the Bears still won a one-goal game for the second time in a row. Cal Petersen and a defense corps that kept collapsing in front of him made that possible, and Andrew Cristall set up both goals. It isn’t how Hershey wants to win every night, but it worked for a second straight game.

How It Happened

First Period: Texas controlled the opening 20 minutes and outshot Hershey 10-5. Petersen stopped everything, and the teams went to the room scoreless.

Second Period: Grant Cruikshank’s slashing minor at 0:37 expired without damage, but the Stars broke through 11 seconds later. At 2:48, Matthew Seminoff fed defenseman Ben Gleason from behind the net, and Gleason’s one-timer deflected off Cruikshank and past Petersen. Mike Sgarbossa had the second assist. Sgarbossa spent seven seasons with the Bears before signing with Texas this summer. Hershey answered 1:24 later. Jonny Brodzinski and Cristall set up Leon Muggli, who tied it 1-1 at 4:12 with a shot from the blue line in his season debut. Hershey got its only power play when Artem Shlaine was called for tripping at 4:30, but couldn’t score. The second period was much more even, with Texas holding an 11-10 edge in shots. Ryan Chesley drew some tough matchups against Sgarbossa in the second and third periods and held up well.

Third Period: Hershey’s defensemen took over the period with takeaways and blocked shots, and held Texas to four shots on goal. At 13:20, Cristall set up Bogdan Trineyev, who slipped a shot under Brandon Halverson’s blocker for his first goal of the season and a 2-1 lead. Texas pulled Halverson for an extra attacker in the final two minutes, but Petersen and the Bears closed it out. “Everyone battled hard, did their jobs, and really collapsed in the D-zone to do our best to try to help out Cal,” Chesley said. “And when he needed to make the saves, he did.”

Goaltending

Cal Petersen made 24 saves on 25 shots (.960) for Hershey. It was his first win as a Bear and his 250th career AHL game, and he is now 5-0-0 in his career against Texas. “All we ask is that they give us a chance to win a hockey game, and that’s what he did tonight,” head coach Derek King said. Brandon Halverson took the loss, stopping 19 of 21 shots (.905) in 58:12.

Key Notes

  • Franchise first: This was the first regular-season meeting between Hershey and Texas. The teams’ only previous meetings came in the 2010 Calder Cup Finals. Texas won the first two games in Hershey, and then the Bears won four straight, three of them on the road, to take the series in six for the franchise’s 11th Calder Cup.
  • Career milestone: Petersen played his 250th AHL game, earned his first win with Hershey and improved to 5-0-0 in his career against Texas.
  • Sgarbossa had an assist in his first game back in Hershey since leaving the organization in the summer of 2025. He spent 2018-25 with the Bears and won the 2023 Calder Cup with them.
  • Brodzinski also extended his assist streak to three games and has 3 assists, one in each game.
  • Chesley’s game: King said the second-year defenseman is better when he skates the puck out instead of passing it, and that defending is what will get him “to that next level.”
  • Hershey has won back-to-back one-goal games after a 5-2 loss in the season opener. The Bears were outshot in both wins.
  • Hershey’s power play is 0-for-9 through three games.
  • Hershey is 2-1-0-0 and Texas is 1-1-0-1. Texas, the Dallas Stars’ AHL affiliate, was playing its first road game of the season.
  • It was B-E-A-R-Sapalooza Country Night at Giant Center, and the first 6,000 fans received a straw cowboy hat.
  • Next meeting: Sunday, October 11, at Giant Center. The Bears then visit Texas for two games in March at H-E-B Center at Cedar Park.
