Andrei Svechnikov and Sebastian Aho each had a goal and an assist as Carolina scored three times in 6:38 of the second period and handed the Flyers a franchise-record seventh straight loss to open a season. October 11, 2026.
Carolina Hurricanes 4, Philadelphia Flyers 1 Xfinity Mobile Arena, Philadelphia, PA
For about 30 minutes this looked like the game the Flyers have been waiting for. They were physical, they killed penalties, and they kept the best team in the league off the board. Then Carolina scored three goals in 6:38 of the second period, and the night ended with boos and “Fire Tocchet!” chants. Philadelphia is 0-5-2, the first team in franchise history to lose its first seven games. Eight days after Shayne Gostisbehere beat his old team in overtime, he scored the game-winner against them again.
How It Happened
First Period: Carolina outshot Philadelphia 11-5, but the Flyers kept most of the play to the outside, and nobody scored. Oliver Bonk, recalled from Lehigh Valley that day, took cross-checking and hooking minors at 11:59 and 14:37, and the Flyers killed both. Michael Bunting drew a William Carrier tripping minor at 17:12, but Philadelphia’s power play couldn’t convert.
Second Period: The Flyers got nothing from a second Carrier minor at 1:11, and Carolina broke through at 10:16. Owen Tippett had already hit the post for the second straight game when Bonk turned the puck over at the blue line to former Flyer Sean Walker. Walker fed Andrei Svechnikov on a two-on-one, and Svechnikov snapped a wrist shot into the top corner. At 13:45, after a Trevor Zegras turnover inside the Carolina blue line, Carrier carried the puck in on the right and found Aho in the slot. Aho threaded a pass between Bonk’s skates to Gostisbehere at the bottom of the left circle, and Gostisbehere scored into an open net to make it 2-0. “That was a freebie for me,” he said. Philadelphia answered at 15:26 when Denver Barkey worked the puck on the right side and sent it back to Nick Seeler at the left point and Seeler’s shot deflected in off Christian Dvorak. The Hurricanes needed only 88 seconds to restore the two-goal lead. Svechnikov took the puck from Owen Tippett near the Flyers’ blue line and pushed it ahead to Carrier, who drove through the middle past Bonk and set up Aho in the right circle. Aho’s shot slipped through Woll’s legs at 16:54. Carolina’s top line of Aho, Svechnikov and Carrier had a hand in all three second-period goals. “Obviously the third goal was obviously a dejected goal,” Rick Tocchet said.
Third Period: The Flyers pushed early. Jaccob Slavin swept away a Travis Sanheim chance that had gotten behind Kochetkov, and Kochetkov stopped Noah Cates on a Grade A look set up by Matvei Michkov. Philadelphia then killed off a Tyson Foerster cross-checking minor at 10:18 and still trailed by two. At 15:09, Seeler blocked a Jordan Martinook shot and the puck went right to Mark Jankowski, who scored from the high slot to make it 4-1. Neither team scored on its power plays in the period. “We know we’ve got to turn it around ASAP,” Dvorak said afterward. “We showed at times tonight what we can do, just got to be consistent with it.”
Goaltending
Pyotr Kochetkov made 18 saves on 19 shots (.947) for Carolina, including the third-period stop on Cates. He’s 3-0-0 this season and 8-1-0 in his career against Philadelphia. “I thought that was the difference, really,” Brind’Amour said. “He made some big saves when we needed it.” Joseph Woll took the loss, stopping 26 of 30 (.867) in 59:50 of work.

Key Notes
- Franchise record: Philadelphia’s seven straight losses to open the season (0-5-2) are a franchise record. The Flyers had twice gone six games without a win to start a season, in 1999-00 and 2008-09. No NHL team had started 0-7 since Vancouver in 2022-23, and it’s Philadelphia’s longest losing streak since eight straight (0-6-2) from March 24 to April 9, 2024. The Flyers have been outscored 28-8, the worst start in franchise history.
- Career milestone: Jordan Martinook’s assist on the final goal was his 200th point with Carolina (82 goals, 118 assists) in 557 games.
- Prospect callup: The Flyers recalled defenseman Oliver Bonk from the Lehigh Valley Phantoms on Sunday. In his season debut he had 2 shots, two minors and a minus-3 in 16:28, and he was involved in all three of Carolina’s second-period goals. Forward Matthew Studnicka was recalled from Lehigh Valley on Monday.
- Carolina (5-1-1) has won five straight and four straight on the road, and leads the NHL with 11 points. This was the second half of a back-to-back after a 5-2 win at Chicago on Saturday.
- Svechnikov had his third multi-point game in five games and has 8 points, second on the team behind Aho (11). Carrier had his second multi-point game as a Hurricane.
- Aho’s six goals tie for the NHL lead, and he has 11 points (six goals, five assists) in a six-game point streak, tied for the longest active streak in the league. It was his third multi-point game, and only Connor McDavid, Nathan MacKinnon and Jack Eichel (four each) have more. It was his fifth goal in seven career games against Woll.
- Jankowski has scored in four straight games, a career best, and has five points in that stretch.
- Gostisbehere scored the game-winner against his former team eight days after his overtime winner against them on October 3. Both of his goals this season have come against the Flyers.
- Carolina has earned at least a point in 12 straight games in Philadelphia. The defending Stanley Cup champions have won five in a row after losing their first two.
- Carolina’s penalty kill went 3-for-3, its fifth perfect night of the season, tied for the league high. Philadelphia’s penalty kill was a perfect 4-for-4 in the loss.
- The Flyers outhit Carolina 20-13 and blocked 14 shots, including 4 by Nick Seeler.
- Philadelphia has lost 13 of 14 games since taking a 3-0 lead over Pittsburgh in last spring’s Eastern Conference First Round, including the Eastern Conference Second Round sweep by Carolina.
- Injuries: Travis Konecny (lower body) was placed on injured reserve, and Cam York and Rasmus Ristolainen are also out. Carolina was without captain Jordan Staal (lower body), and Brind’Amour said he hopes it’s “nothing serious.” Seth Jarvis is recovering from offseason shoulder surgery.
