On September 18, En Vogue, TLC, and Salt-N-Pepa made a stop in Virginia Beach as part of their It’s Iconic tour. The tour is aptly named Iconic, as the three headliners graced the stage and played their music that’s lasted decades that really can only be qualified as “iconic.”
An hour before the show started, there was a DJ priming the crowd. The energy in the venue was electric, it felt like a big girls-night-out with 10,000 of your closest friends. There was mostly women in the crowd, but there were fans of every age, race, and creed and this felt like more than just a throw back.
This show was definitely for the girls with each band having their feminine anthems playing, and the backup dancers bringing eye candy for the crowd. Each set of divas sort of “round-robbined” their performance with each musician rotating with a mini-set.
En Vogue was first on stage and they MADE AN ENTRANCE. The outfits they wore were definitely vogue with the a-symmetrical hemline and the bustled train behind, and the gold studs. It was nothing short of fabulous and they’ve only gotten better with time.
TLC was next, and this set is really where my heart thrilled. Chilli was the only one representing TLC as T-Boz is currently battling sickle-cell. Chilli addressed the crowd and gave an update that she’s on the mend and joining the tour. Left Eye was still a part of the set as her voice was tracked in.
Salt-N-Pepa then made their entrance with a giant record above as they came in with their signature red and yellow parachute pants, their message was simple but it was loud-they hip-hop icons.
As nostalgia hits heavy for Gen X and Millennials harder than normal, and all of our teenage bands touring, it’s no surprise this one would be different. However, this show was something more than just revisiting the golden years. It was uplifting and empowering, and felt healing. As someone who is still saddened by Left Eye’s death 24 years ago, this felt like a tribute to her and just remarked to me about the legacy that all of these bands have left and just how far their reach on every corner of the earth goes.
The It’s Iconic tour is still going strong for a few weeks, ending in California October 11. Any product of the 80’s and 90’s really owes it to themselves, as well ad our icons, to go see this show.
