Sevendust’s One

Written By: Zaneta Will

This Friday, I’ll be singing “Wake up, it’s the first of the month,” like Bone Thugs N Harmony, but instead of just celebrating leaving a month behind me, I’m celebrating the release of Sevendust’s 15th album!

For over 3 decades, the guys are still going hard and ONE is an incredible record that showcases 30 years of experience and has the perfect evolution of “newness” and Sevendust’s signature written all over. They’ve found that perfect balance where no one can accuse them of staying stagnant and producing the same music, nor can they accuse them of changing and sounding nothing like themselves.

At first listen, there were two tracks that stood out to me, but second listen where I was focused and submerging myself into the album, I couldn’t pick a favorite song. The entire album was so carefully pieced together, every song goes hard and every song was beautiful with a mix of screaming vocals and melodic vocals and harmonizing.

“Threshold” was the first song that stood out to me. It starts out with a static rhythm and Lajon’s low vocals, then builds with the drums coming in heavy. This is a song you have to watch, though, with their music video being in claymation in the style of celebrity deathmatch.

“Blood Price” is a song that I can’t wait to see live. It has a balance of two extremes in music as it starts with slow orchestral strings, then the growling guitar comes in to take over and add aggression to the song with guttural vocals and an immediate shift to Lajons angelic melodic voice. It’s a song that has something for everyone with crunchy guitars, insane guitar shreds and shifts in timing.

The final track, “Misdirection,” is another track that has something for everyone. The intro comes in slow and low with quiet single notes and the vocals come in holding onto those notes giving an eerie feeling and I could see this song being a perfect score in a thriller accompanied with a Dutch Tilt or the Vertigo camera angle. I thought “Misdirection” was the perfect name for this song, cause it felt like several different songs  blended into one with the tempo changes, and layering the instruments in different parts. This is the best song they could end-cap this album with, it gives the listener a cinematic experience with a full 3 acts in the song.

Sevendust will be going on tour this week for their ONE album release, beginning April 28 at the Dallas House of Blues with 18 US tour stops and 16 Europe stops later this fall. This album is one to experience live with all the bass drops and heavy drums and growling guitars, so make sure you get your tickets now to a show near you, and pre-order and pre-save ONE.
