Fans have waited two long years for the rescheduled ‘Fear Inoculum’ tour which was canceled in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic to return to the D.C. area. Earlier in the day the band had announced that they would be releasing OPIATE2 as an extended EP and Blu-ray. Tool took to the stage shortly before nine to a packed house at Capital One Arena. The band took to the stage as the intro, “Litanie contre la Peur” played and visuals scrolled by on the mesh screen that hung in front of the stage. As the crowd cheered and rose to their feet the band kicked the set off with “Fear Inoculum” the ever so elusive front-man, Maynard James Keenan stood in the shadows on a riser to the left of the drum kit. Throughout the night the singer would alternate platforms on each side of the stage always staying just out of clear view of the light. The night’s set consisted of a ten song set with roughly a twelve minute intermission followed by a three song encore that ended with “Invincible”.
The tour is in support of the band’s fifth studio album, Fear Inoculum which hit the number one spot on the US Billboard 200 and Top Rock Albums charts when it was released back in 2019. So it wasn’t surprising the nights thirteen song set weighed heavy on material from the latest release. Rounding out the set were fan favorites, “Opiate,” “The Pot,” and “Hooker With a Penis”.
