After nearly a two year delay the ‘Stadium Tour’ featuring Joan Jett, Poison, Def Leppard, and Mötley Crüe came to Washington, D.C’s Nationals Park on Wednesday night. The tour, which is one of the biggest tours of the year has sold over one million tickets to date, and will hit thirty-five cities over the summer.
Over forty-five thousand fans filled Nationals Park to take a trip down memory lane with some of the biggest bands of the classic hair-metal era. The evening started early with a 3:45 start time for opener Classless Act who played a quick thirty minute, five song set as most fans who had arrived early were still making their way into the stadium.
As Joan Jett and the Blackhearts took the stage mother nature decided she didn’t want to miss the show and brought the first of several waves of rain through out the evening. Playing thru the rain Joan Jett kicked things off with “Victim of Circumstance” followed by the classic Runaways song “Cherry Bomb”. The twelve song set included fan favorites, “Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah),” “Crimson & Clover,” “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll,” “I Hate Myself for Loving You,” and ended with “Bad Reputation”.
The rain let up long enough for Poison to rip thru their set which included nine classic Poison hits, a Rikki Rocket, and a blistering guitar solo by C.C. DeVille. Poison’s high energy set, set the tone for the rest of the night and had the crowd up and out of their seats.
Mötley Crüe and Def Leppard have been alternating headlining slots on the tour and on Wednesday it was Mötley Crüe’s turn to headline. So Def Leppard took to the stage first and midway thru their set mother nature decided to return with heavy rains and lightning forcing the band to end their set early. Before being forced to end their set fans were treated to ” Animal,” “Foolin’,” “Rocket,” “Bringin’ on the Heartbreak,” “Hysteria,” and “Pour Some Sugar on Me.” At the conclusion of “Pour Some Sugar on Me” the guys were forced to leave the stage and fans were encouraged to seek shelter in the main concourse due to lighting around the stadium.
After a roughly ninety minute delay Mötley Crüe took to the stage and wasted no time getting into classic Crüe hits “Wild SIde,” “Shout at the Devil,” and “Too Fast for Love.” There have been plenty of videos from the tour showing Vince struggling on vocals, but for the most part he did ok and sounded pretty good. Tommy Lee still suffering from his broken ribs played thru the first three songs of the set before being replaced by Tommy Clufetos on “Don’t Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)”. Tommy did take a minute on his departure to have some fun with the crowd bringing a tray of ribs and some beer that he shared with some lucky fans in the front rows. From their the guys continued on with the set playing “Live Wire,” “Looks That Kill,” and a medley of “Rock and Roll, Part 2 / Smokin’ in the Boys Room / White Punks on Dope / Helter Skelter / Anarchy in the U.K.” Tommy Lee returned to the stage to play piano and drums on fan favorite “Home Sweet Home.” The night wrapped up with “Dr. Feelgood,” “Girls, Girls, Girls,” “Primal Scream,” and “Kickstart My Heart.”
Overall it was a night of incredible music and a show that was well worth the wait. The ‘Stadium’ tour will continue making its way across the country this summer before wrapping up on September 9th in Las Vegas. Will Mötley Crüe retire once again, or will they continue to tour entertaining their long time fans and making new ones along the way, only time will tell.
