Grab your eyeliner, put your orthotics in your Converse, and slap some Bengay on cause The Offspring has a new album coming out! SUPERCHARGED releases October 11 and it promises on the name. Formed 40 years ago, this band still delivers the aggressive melodic and dizzying-fast songs.
“We wanted this record to have pure energy from start to the finish!” says vocalist Dexter Holland. From the height of our aspirations to the depths of our struggles, we talk about it all on this record. In a way, that celebrates the life that we share and where we are.”
“Come To Brazil” stands out on the album to me. There’s a heavy Metallica influence to it, then turns into an Irish Rock style song. It’s an all out party song that Holland considers a love song to Brazilian fans. “Brazil really does go off. It had an enthusiasm and passion and is an amazing place to play.” He adds “I hope the fans make this song their own.”
“Get Some” starts with a guitar warp note that instantly brought memories of Queen on my bedroom floor. I like to think this song is a subtle tribute to the band as Holland earned his PhD in between their last album release and has grown close to Brian May of Queen with their science backgrounds. “Some people see it as a contradiction to have a science degree and yet be into music but there’s a connection there,” says Holland. “Music is mathematical in the way it can be structured, and if you take enough of that, it cane help you in your songwriting.”
This album comes out of the gate with no time being wasted. “We wanted to connect with the world…like a big punch in the face,” says Holland. It definitely accomplished that with the speed and intricacy of their melodies. The entire album is a delicate balance achieved in sounding just like Offspring, but evolving so it’s not “just like Offspring.”
I just want to know what Offspring is on to still be playing like this for longer than I’ve been alive, cause I already know I’ll be sore tomorrow after giving this a good listen.
Their album is out October 11 and is available to pre-order now with singles “Make It All Right” and “Light It Up” already released. They’ll be kicking off this album with a tour, starting with Louder Than Life, September 26.
