The gods of pussy are back again and they’re on the prowl, both figuratively and literally with their latest album, On the Prowl. Welcoming Spyder as their new bassist, this album is the best welcoming for his spot on the band.
The pandemic brought the opportunity for the band to record in their own private studios, and their sixth full length album really gets to show off their creation fully without the big wigs getting in the way.
“Friends with Benefits” is such a sweet song dedicated to the best kind of friends. In between the sick guitar licks, there’s a romance in the lyrics about the give and take of a great friendship like “You get to spend my cash, I get to bang that gash.” Singer, Michael Starr says “We have a bunch of girlfriends who come with special benefits. We can get graphic, dirty and deep, but everything is surrounded by love. We love hanging with random chicks. There are male friends with benefits too–like guys who have free cocaine.”
“1987” is a great song for nostalgia. The first line alone takes you back to the rockin’ 80’s thinking back to when hair bands were our gods with “Appetite for Destruction blowing us all away. Poison looking so damn good, I wondered if I was gay.” This track is one of the softer ballads that makes you pause and miss the simpler time of leather and aquanet. “1987 was a great time to be alive. Nobody worried about canceling people, and everybody laughed. Van Halen was freshly broken up, but we were optimistic the original lineup would be back,” reminisces Satchel. “You could tell when people listened to the clothes they wear. I still wear spandex, so that’s all that matters.” With today’s insane culture, we’re so lucky that Steel Panther exists in this day and age to carry on the torch and bring the 80’s to us today.
As an owner of one, “Magical Vagina” really resonated with me. It’s a “glorious celebration of the human anatomy ever committed to tape.” This may be the most romantic song to exist after “Community Property” swept me away with the big gushy hearts the boys in Steel Panther have. Every time I listen to this song, I wistfully look at my Steel Panther posters on my wall, imagining they’re singing to me that “I can’t get enough of your vagina. I’m in love with your vagina.” Ever the philanthropist, Satchel ponders “We write songs to unite people. Even if you’ve never seen a vagina, you know what a magical vagina must be like.” There’s speculation that this song was written about Michael Starr’s mom’s vagina, since it obviously was a magical one to birth a rock god of his caliber. Michael starr is “thanking all the moms for breastfeeding and pumping out metal kids. After coming out of a vagina, all you do when you get older is try to get back in one…circle of life.”
On The Prowl releases February 24 and it makes the perfect gift when you forgot Valentine’s Day was 10 days before. It rocks so hard, though, that your lover will completely forget about that and dive into the sheets to thank you for the treasure bestowed upon them. Steel Panther is also on tour this year, so make sure you check out their socials and catch a show live.
“The whole idea of Steel Panther is to have fun and escape reality. You can come to one of our shows with your friends, drink some beers, have laugh, see some titties and fucking rock out.” -Michael Starr
“To quote the great Uncle Ben. No, not the rice one, the one from Spider Man. With great power comes great responsibility and it is our responsibility to stay the course of Steel Panther and be this place where you can let your fucking hair down.” Stix Zadinia. And what a huge responsibility rests on their shoulders, but thank God for these men who have answered the call so we can rock out. Let’s do our part and buy their new album, tickets to their shows and some fucking merch!
