Pantera

Heavy metal icons, Pantera wrapped up their current leg of their US tour Friday night at Jiffy Lube Live in Bristow, VA. This celebration tour includes original members Philip Anselmo and Rex Brown joined by Zakk Wylde (guitar) and Charlie Benante (drums). The stop at Jiffy Lube Live marked the final night of the current leg of the US tour, and fans filled the amphitheater to kick the weekend off with a night of metal.

Australia’s King Parrot kicked things off for the evening with their grindcore style of metal for an opening eight song set.

Lamb of God, led by the formidable Randy Blythe on vocals, wasted no time in unleashing their sonic assault on the audience. The setlist was a balanced mix of Lamb of God’s classics and newer tracks. Songs like “Memento Mori,” “Walk with Me in Hell,” and “Now You’ve Got Something to Die For” incited mosh pits and crowd-surfing that only intensified as the set went on. The guitar duo of Mark Morton and Willie Adler unleashed a barrage of razor-sharp riffs and blistering solos, along with the thunderous basslines of John Campbell, and the powerhouse drumming of Art Cruz proved that Lamb of God’s musicianship is nothing short of phenomenal. Randy, with his newly shaved head was a force to be reckoned with, prowling the stage like a caged beast moving with a raw, untamed energy, even leaping from the drum riser. No Lamb of God set would be complete without wrapping up with “Redneck” where fans gave it all for one last song as a massive mosh pit broke out in front of the stage.

After a blistering set by Lamb of God, it was time for Pantera’s highly awaited reunion tour. As the crowd chanted “Pan-ter-a! Pan-ter-a!” in unison, the curtain dropped and there they were – Phil Anselmo, Rex Brown,  Charlie Benante, and Zakk Wylde kicking the night off with “A New Level.” Pantera’s setlist was a masterclass in brutality, featuring classics like “5 Minutes Alone,” “I’m Broken,” “Fucking Hostile,” and “This Love.” Each song was delivered with relentless intensity, and Phil Anselmo’s powerful, guttural vocals sounded as fierce as ever. The crowd responded with an unceasing mosh pit that spanned the entire pit. Zakk Wylde, known for his work with Ozzy Osbourne and Black Label Society, proved to be a worthy stand-in for Dimebag Darrell. Wylde’s mastery of the guitar was nothing short of astounding as he paid tribute to Dimebag’s legendary riffs and blistering solos. Before “Planet Caravan” there was a video tribute to late great Abbott brothers, Dimebag and Vinnie. Randy and Mark, of Lamb of God returned to the stage with members of King Parrot to join forces with Pantera for “Walk.”

Pantera may have been gone from the touring circuit for a while, but they proved that their music and legacy are very much alive. This was more than just a concert; it was a testament to the enduring power of metal and the enduring legacy of Pantera. The show was a fitting tribute to Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul, showcasing their enduring legacy in the world of heavy metal.
