One of the biggest metal tours of the summer hit Jiffy Lube Live in Bristow, VA Tuesday night, the stacked lineup included the Butcher Babies, Nonpoint, Gwar, Coal Chamber, and Mudvayne.
Things kicked off early on Tuesday night with doors opening at 4:30 and Butcher Babies taking to the stage at 5:30. It’d been a few years since I’d seen the Butcher Babies, but Carla, Heidi, and the boys are never ones to disappoint, and they didn’t disappoint this night as they quickly got the crowd up and jumping with “Red Thunder” from their just released double album, Eye for an Eye… / …’Til the World’s Blind which can be purchased HERE. The short six song set consisted mostly of new material, with “Monsters Ball,” and “Magnolia Blvd.” being the only older material to make the setlist. Fans will have to wait for a headlining tour, as the band will head to the UK and Europe at the conclusion of the current tour to tour with Fear Factory thru December.
Next up on the evening was Nonpoint, who continued to bring the energy level up in the amphitheater with “Victim” from the debut album, Statement. Despite some microphone issues vocalist Elias Soriano was able to keep things moving as the band moved into “Dodge Your Destiny” and “What a Day.” Fans were treated to some new music as the band played “A Million Watts” from their upcoming EP Heartless which is set to drop November 17th. Fans can pre-order the EP HERE. Hopefully fans can look forward to a full album release in 2024, until then the EP will have to hold them over. From there the guys jumped into one of my favorite Nonpoint songs, “Chaos and Earthquakes,” and wrapped up with 2005’s “Bullet With a Name.”
GWAR is known for bringing the gore to their live performances where fans are sprayed with various colors of blood, however on this night it things were scaled back a little compared to a typical GWAR show. There seemed be less spraying the fans, this may be due to the size of the tour and limited time between cutovers to clean up the stage. But none the less there was blood as the buzz saws and weapons came out on “Hail, Genocide!.” More blood flowed as Putin himself made an appearance during “Mother Fucking Liar” Putin was quickly dismembered spewing blood on fans in the pit. A lucky fan who had won a contest got to join in on the action during “Completely Fucked.” Of course what better way to wrap up a GWAR set then a cover of AC/DC’s “If You Want Blood (You’ve Got It)” where there was a constant flow of blood spewed out onto the fans.
Once the stage was cleared and cleaned fans got to witness the return of 90’s nu-metal band, Coal Chamber. The band reunited late last year and performed live together for the first time since 2015 at the Las Vegas Sick New World festival in May. The band wasted no time getting things started with a twelve song set filled with classic Coal Chamber hits. Mosh pits quickly formed “Loco” was first up followed by “Fiend,” and “Big Truck.” From there things just continued to get better with “Drive,” “Dark Days,” “Something Told Me,” and “Sway” wrapping things up for the night. Vocalist Dez Fafara has hinted at the possibility of the band recording new music, fans will just have to wait and see.
Closing out the night was none other than Mudvayne. Mudvayne reunited and toured with Rob Zombie last summer but this marks the first headlining tour by the band since 2009. Mudvayne was definitely firing on all cylinders as the curtain dropped and they launched into “Not Falling.” The crowd feed off the energy flowing from the stage as Chad spent most of the time on the speakers in front of the stage getting as close as he could to the fans on the barricade during “Under My Skin,” and “Internal Primates Forever.” The production and setlist for this tour are pretty much the same, however the energy of the band is on a whole new level. The twelve song set also included “Death Blooms,” “Dig,” and wrapped up with “Happy?” Don’t miss out on your chance to catch this tour when it comes to your town. The tour will wrap up on August 26th in Englewood, CO at Fiddler’s Green Amphitheatre.
