In This Moment is releasing their 7th full-length album, Mother this Friday. This 14-track album is a great collection that showcases every members talents and skillsets.
After the overture, “Fly Like an Eagle” opens the album. This cover removes the automatic association of Space Jam with the song, as Maria sings with her raspy metal vocals, and the drums accompany in a Mad Maxian heavy beat. For so many of their songs having an ethereal tone to them, I love that they took that out of a song that already had that feel. This is a cover I’ve loved more than its original.
Another cover on this album that ITM just ROCKED is a cover of Queen’s “We Will Rock You” with fellow rock goddesses Lzzy Hale and Taylor Momsen. The classic song that automatically dictates singing and stomping sounds amazing with the heavy guitar, and the rockin’ harmonies.
The title track, “Mother,” has an empowering quality to it as Maria belts the lyrics, and the drums accompany it with a militaristic beat. I love the theme of devotion the lyrics sing: “I will stand up for you. There isn’t anything I won’t do, I’ll give you my everything, I’ll never let you fall.”
In this album, Mother Maria’s beau Joe Cotela, vocalist for Ded, joins on “Hunting Grounds.” You can hear it here. Their voices pair so well together with his deeper voice and her soft ethereal voice.
