Capitals Defeat Flyers 4-1

The Washington Capitals defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 4-1 on October 22, 2024, marking the Flyers’ fifth consecutive loss. The game saw two shorthanded goals by the Capitals in the first period, contributing to their strong start.

1st Period:
Capitals lead 2-0: The Capitals set the tone early with two shorthanded goals. Nic Dowd opened the scoring at 16:11, assisted by Martin Fehervary, giving Washington a 1-0 lead while on the penalty kill. Just two minutes later, Andrew Mangiapane added a second shorthanded goal at 4:53, assisted by Connor McMichael. Philadelphia struggled to find momentum, and penalties hindered their progress.

2nd Period:
No goals: The second period was scoreless as both teams played a more defensive game. The Flyers had multiple chances but failed to capitalize on the power play. Penalties against Philadelphia, including those to Ryan Poehling and Travis Konecny, disrupted their flow and prevented them from gaining any offensive traction.

3rd Period:
Capitals win 4-1: The Flyers got on the board with a goal from Travis Sanheim at 8:12, closing the gap to 2-1. However, the Capitals responded with two more goals. John Carlson extended the lead to 3-1, followed by Mangiapane scoring his second goal of the night to make it 4-1, securing the victory for Washington.

Key player performances:

John Carlson (Capitals): 1 goal, 2 blocked shots, 5 shots on goal.
Andrew Mangiapane (Capitals): 1 goal, 1 blocked shot, 3 shots on goal.
Travis Sanheim (Flyers): 1 goal, 1 blocked shot, 2 shots on goal.
The Capitals’ solid defense and efficient penalty kill, combined with the Flyers’ penalty issues, shaped the outcome of the game.
