Blackwater Drowning’s Obscure Sorrows

Written By: Zaneta Will

Blackwater Drowning just released their sophomore album in February of this year. This album holds more meaning with all members contributing in the creative process. The lyrics focus on commentary about injustices, and common life themes of depression and death. There’s also a focus on the macabre and fascinating lore of La Llarona, demons, and generational curses.

The album offers a beautiful blend of raspy, guttural vocals, and belting melodies, and orchestral strings with the quick and heavy riffs of metal.

In the first track, “The 6th Omen,” it begins with a beautiful violin opener, then quickly gets taken over with a heavy track and dark vocals. This song makes me think of La Llorona and her perspective as she sings “Oh, my children, where shall I take you now?” The juggle in the lyrics of a blind rage and being left with something that can’t be undone gives a perspective into the lore that I don’t think is often thought about.

“Devour” is next on the album and showcases vocalist Morgan’s range with those strong melodic notes and how she quickly can go from a siren’s voice, into the guttural, raspy vocals. The lyrics about “oppressing weight” and all consuming feelings offer the perfect anthem to the band’s name. As bassist Aria Novi explains “blackwater represents both darkness and rebirth. Drowning conveys the idea that darkness can be all consuming.”

If you’re a fan of female fronted metal bands, make sure you get your hands on their latest album, out now on all platforms.
