Alternative Americana artist Amigo the Devil will release a new single “Cannibal Within” on Friday, Oct. 6. The news comes with the announcement of a forthcoming studio album, Yours Until the War is Over, set to release Feb. 23, 2024 via Liars Club Records / Regime Music Group.

“Cannibal Within” descends to the depth of the human experience. Self-produced and recorded in a backwoods bar-turned-studio, the banjo-driven tune speaks to honesty without pity. Experimental percussion – like the repetitive dropping of a pick, bottle tinks and the clacking of toy teeth – immerses the listener within an internal dialogue of self-doubt and insecurities, personified.

All the parts we hate start adding up
Until we find ourselves with more regret than blood.
The moment we don’t recognize the person inside our skin
We’re losing the fight, eaten alive by the cannibal within.
“There’s a tiny little cannibal inside of us all and it feeds on our insecurities. The more it feeds on doubt, jealousy and self devaluation, the bigger it grows until it becomes bigger than we ourselves are. And then we’re left with nothing. We lose the war,” says Amigo the Devil, otherwise known as Danny Kiranos, of the new song.
“Cannibal Within” marks the preamble to Amigo the Devil’s forthcoming album, Yours Until the War is Over, a 13-track collection that weaves together themes of relatable self destruction and trauma bonding with arresting authenticity. Riddled with obscure literary references – akin to Kiranos’ maniac reading habit – the album is his most singular work to date. It proves that this whole Amigo the Devil thing isn’t some true crime niche. Yours Until the War is Over is a songwriter’s record.
The album title is a reference to Ernest Hemmingway’s tragic love story with Agnes von Kurowsky during World War I – again, trauma bonding – who would occasionally sign love letters to Hemmingway, “Yours until the war is over.” Created from the mood of handwritten desires, songs thread together stories of using a relationship for survival, whether by addiction, doubt, death or narcissism.
Similar to his greatest influences, Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen, Amigo the Devil embodies the truest form of an artist in this new work. Inspired by a mantra adopted from unexpected, late-night advice, he doesn’t have to “be the story to tell the story.” Songwriting doesn’t have to be linear, or biographical. Yours Until the War is Over is all heart, with no boundaries.
The new album’s 2024 release follows the success of his 2021’s Born Against, which garnered critical acclaim from Rolling Stone, Consequence, No Depression and American Songwriter, which described Amigo the Devil as “an artist who gives full reign to intrigue and intellect in equal measure.” Since the inception of this project, record after record, Amigo the Devil continues to expand his understanding of avoided aspects of humanity. Songs have fascinating insight, cracking a joke in the most unexpected moments.

Yours Until the War is Over will be released under his independent label, Liars Club Records. Amigo the Devil will bring the album’s first single “Cannibal Within” to life on the road this fall. The tour kicks off Oct. 9 at the Brooklyn Bowl in Philadelphia and will travel to venues across the Northeast, Midwest and West Coast. Standout performances include stops in Brooklyn, Boston, Chicago, Austin and a special Halloween experience at the Wiltern in Los Angeles Oct. 29. The 26-date run also features support from Nate Bergman, David Ramirez and Shayfer James.
The fall tour reaches an epic finale at The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado. The sold-out, immersive concert weekend Nov. 11-12 will feature nightly performances by Amigo the Devil. Other performers include Rattlesnake Milk, Jonathan Terrell and David Ramirez, with visual acts by No Ring Circus, late-night bar room sets, a writer’s round and more at the historic, haunting hotel.
